When New Voices New Rooms announced its Accessibility Policy in early July, the focus was on its responsibilities, the things the conference was doing to remove barriers for people to participate. In particular, the conference has created an Accessibility Pass, available without any gatekeeping, to allow an attendee to go to the front of lines for signings or meals.
In its Accessibility Policy NVNR also outlines "Communal Responsibilities," the things conference attendees should do to support accessible space for their colleagues. It asks all attendees to test for COVID-19 and flu before they come, to stay home if they test positive, to avoid wearing perfumes or strongly scented products, and to allow anyone with an Accessibility Pass to go to the front of the line without question.

By invoking communal participation in creating accessible space, NVNR seeks to create a culture not just free of barriers, but actively welcoming for all conference attendees.
